ICT allows students to communicate, share and work collaboratively in local and global environments broadening their National and Geographical boundaries (Finger, Russell, Jamieson-Proctor & Russell, 2007).

Students’ ability to find and then evaluate information and construct new knowledge is enhanced through connecting with the world outside the classroom, opening new possibilities that will enable individuals to build new nodes of knowledge depending on their needs and learning styles (Queensland Governement smart classrooms, 2014).

General internet safety tips are a good start in helping children to develop appropriate online etiquette and learn appropriate ways of communicating and responding online. By clicking on the above image you will be able to view a website that we will be visiting in class.

ICT etiquette is an important skill as ICT is about communication and connection with not only student's peers but the entire web world. Connecting students with informative and educational programs will strengthen their ICT knowledge.

By incorporating ICT into our lessons students will develop ICT capability as they learn to use ICT effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively in all learning areas at school, and in their lives beyond school (ACARA, 2012).

StudentsSome may argue that it is inevitable that our children interact with ICT in the 21st Century. If this is true then students need to be equipped with the right tools. Through education we can provide these tools, ensuring our children have the greatest chance of being successful on their pathway towards further education, training and eventually employment (ACARA, 2012).

Parents

'Kids do more,Tips for parents and caregivers' Is a document compiled by the QLD Government (2014). The pdf document located to the right is aimed at providing parents with some helpful sites and suggestions in how parents can encourage their child's education through ICT in a safe and supportive environment.

Parents: A good home -school connection is important in a student's education.  It provides the support and knowledge to all parties involved. This connection can be strengthened through ICT.  The classroom blog is a great way for parents and caregivers to see what activities the class has been involved in and some examples of student's work.

Another great program we will be using this year is a site called 'class Dojo'.  You can take a look at the site by clicking on the image below.  The web site is a fun way for you to view how your child is behaving in class and is also a way of encouraging students to behave in class with rewards being given for good behaviour. In a nutshell it is another great way we can connect the classroom with students and their families.  This site will be my way of keeping a behaviour profile of each student.  Both you and your child will have access to this information from your own computer.

Not allowing students access to ICT because of the 'risks' involved would be similar to not driving a car because of the risks involved.

However through education and both parental and teacher guidance students will be able to work safely online and gain the full benefits, from doing so including both educational and social. There are many websites available for parents to view and gain important information from in regards to cyber safety such as the two sites below.
